{"id":10,"date":"2009-02-10T13:53:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-10T17:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/2009\/02\/10\/tell-it-slant\/"},"modified":"2009-02-10T13:53:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-10T17:53:00","slug":"tell-it-slant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2009\/02\/10\/tell-it-slant\/","title":{"rendered":"Tell It Slant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/holycrossadmissionsblog.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/me.holycross.edu\/blogimages\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Drew\" \/><\/a> Emily Dickinson wrote, \u201cTell all the Truth but tell it slant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, I offer you the truth with no slant.\u00a0 There are questions that admissions counselors are asked so often and, in response, we frequently reply with a long-winded, slanted answer.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I offer you the truth.\u00a0 No slant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. \u201cWhen you\u2019re reading all those applications, doesn\u2019t it get old?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it does.<br \/>\nThis is perhaps no great surprise.\u00a0 Do anything repetitively and it is likely to get old after a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. \u201cHow do you remember all those names?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s why we take really good notes.\u00a0 And while names frequently escape us, the stories stick with us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u201cDo you really read all those applications?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No.<br \/>\nI only read some of them; but, I\u2019ve got nearly a dozen great co-workers.\u00a0 At Holy Cross, every application really does get read and, in fact, read by two different admissions counselors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. \u201cWhat do you really look for in an application?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Really good grades in strong classes.<br \/>\nNow, that doesn\u2019t mean that we don\u2019t also want athletes, musicians, artists, leaders, good Samaritans, etc.\u00a0 But, inevitably, the conversation begins with the transcript.\u00a0 It is the most important document in the application.\u00a0 It is the cake and everything else is just frosting.\u00a0 And yes, we\u2019re greedy \u2013 we want frosting with our cake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. \u201cDo you like reading applications?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the time.<br \/>\nRight about now, after about 5 weeks of non-stop reading (and writing), my hand hurts, my neck hurts, my eyes are dry and I\u2019m just a little bug-eyed from all the small print on these transcripts.\u00a0 And there doesn\u2019t seem to be enough time to read all these applications in my office by our deadline on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>But, this morning, a co-worker of mine told me about an essay I\u2019m likely to find in one of those stacks, one that she thinks I\u2019ll like and I\u2019m curious.\u00a0 I\u2019m curious what\u2019s inside all those folders sitting in my office, whose story they tell and whether they might be good fits for Holy Cross.<\/p>\n<p>So, after a 12 minute break to write this blog entry, I\u2019m re-energized, ready to dive back into the stacks of applications, ready for more cake, ready for more frosting.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew N.
