{"id":11,"date":"2009-02-09T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-09T16:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/2009\/02\/09\/application-reading-period-monday\/"},"modified":"2009-02-09T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-09T16:16:00","slug":"application-reading-period-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2009\/02\/09\/application-reading-period-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"Application Reading Period &#8211; Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/holycrossadmissionsblog.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b alignleft\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/me.holycross.edu\/blogimages\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Drew\" \/><\/a>This is the first of five blog entries I\u2019ll offer to you \u2013 a glimpse inside one week during application reading period in the Admissions Office at Holy Cross.<\/p>\n<p>_____________________<\/p>\n<p>Monday<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not personal.<\/p>\n<p>I swear it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>It has absolutely nothing to do with you or your application.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just that when I finish reading an application, I slide the yellow reading sheet inside, close the cover and at that point, I slam it on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Well, perhaps \u201cslam\u201d is too strong of a word.\u00a0 I\u2019m not Hines Ward celebrating a touchdown.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say \u2013 \u201cdrop with force\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You see, I like the sound the application makes when it drops on the ground totally flat &#8212; a slapping, of sorts.<\/p>\n<p>You may enjoy crossing this off a to-do list for a sense of satisfaction; I like dropping applications on the ground and hearing the slap, signaling one step closer to the end of my pile.\u00a0 Yet, when I wake in the morning, there\u2019s yet another pile waiting for me, as if I\u2019ve done nothing that previous day or as if I\u2019m Penelope from the Odyssey, staying up all night undoing the weaving I\u2019ve accomplished during the day.<\/p>\n<p>So I dive into that new pile of applications early in the morning.\u00a0 I go get a cup of coffee first (milk and two sugars, thank you) and then settle in at my desk at home overlooking my snowy back yard in Worcester.\u00a0 And in the quiet of the morning I read your recommendations, your transcripts, your interviews and your essays.<\/p>\n<p>The essays are my favorite part.\u00a0 Some are funny, some are sad, some are silly and some are serious.\u00a0 But, the common thread that runs through them all is that they are you \u2013 a snap shot of your life, taken at a turning point in your life.\u00a0 Sometimes I wonder what you\u2019ll think of your essay five or ten years from now.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll probably think exactly what I thought this morning while I was sitting at my desk at home.<\/p>\n<p>This is good.\u00a0 This is real good.\u00a0 Thanks for sharing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/holycrossadmissionsblog.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f40a970b-popup\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f40a970b\" src=\"http:\/\/me.holycross.edu\/blogimages\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f40a970b-120wi\" alt=\"Applications\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andrew N Carter<br \/>\nAssociate Director of Admissions<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first of five blog entries I\u2019ll offer to you \u2013 a glimpse inside one week during application reading period in the Admissions Office at Holy Cross. _____________________ Monday It\u2019s not personal.
