{"id":27,"date":"2008-10-29T07:44:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-29T11:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/2008\/10\/29\/should-i-apply-early-decision-or-regular-decision\/"},"modified":"2008-10-29T07:44:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-29T11:44:00","slug":"should-i-apply-early-decision-or-regular-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2008\/10\/29\/should-i-apply-early-decision-or-regular-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Should I apply Early Decision or Regular Decision?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/holycrossadmissionsblog.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010535c4cae0970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00e54ed0db8e8833010535c4cae0970b alignleft\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/me.holycross.edu\/blogimages\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010535c4cae0970b-800wi\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Jim_r_tn\" \/><\/a>Many of you have likely met some of us here in Admissions,<br \/>\nmaybe even me(!), over the course of the last two months if we&#8217;ve been in your<br \/>\npart of the country, or even the <em>world <\/em>traveling around visiting<br \/>\nschools and seeking out the best students!\u00a0 Some of you have attended a<br \/>\ncollege fair, or an evening reception, met some alumni, maybe had a personal<br \/>\ninterview, and hopefully you&#8217;ve been to campus by now at least once to see for<br \/>\nyourself all of the simply amazing things you&#8217;ve been hearing about.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve followed the advice of others and &#8220;demonstrated<br \/>\ninterest&#8221;\u00a0to us &#8230; but you&#8217;re wondering, &#8220;<em>how else can I<br \/>\ndemonstrate my interest?<\/em> &#8220;.\u00a0 Well, the strongest demonstration of<br \/>\ninterest you can make is to <strong><em>apply<\/em><\/strong>; that&#8217;s the next step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So what happens to your application after you click<br \/>\n&#8216;submit&#8217;, or place it in your mailbox for the postal worker\u00a0to deliver it<br \/>\nto us?\u00a0 Your application travels many miles, whether through the postal<br \/>\nsystem, or in cyberspace, there are many hours that are investing in your<br \/>\napplication after its submitted.\u00a0 Our clerical staff processes it, matches<br \/>\nit up with all the miscellaneous materials that may already be here, and they<br \/>\nbuild a physical file for you.\u00a0 Your application is then read by several<br \/>\nof the Counselors and given a full cover-to-cover review and evaluation.<br \/>\nOnce it has been prepared by the Counselors in the read process, it then goes before<br \/>\nthe 13 member selection committee for a full presentation and further<br \/>\ndiscussion.\u00a0 Together, all 13 of us make all application decisions.<br \/>\nThe process then comes full circle with a decision letter being generated by<br \/>\nour clerical staff, and mailed off to you to arrive back in your mailbox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So now the question comes up in your mind, how do I<br \/>\napply?\u00a0\u00a0Some of you have already asked us for our opinion, &#8220;S<em>hould<br \/>\nI apply Early Decision, or just file a Regular Admission application? <\/em>&#8221;<br \/>\nTo enter the Early Decision process [deadline: December 15] is a highly<br \/>\npersonal choice; one only you, the student, can make.\u00a0 You may only apply<br \/>\nto one college or university under\u00a0an Early Decision plan.<br \/>\nWhy?\u00a0 It\u2019s binding.\u00a0\u00a0If you were to\u00a0apply Early Decision<br \/>\nhere (or anywhere) you will be saying in effect, &#8220;Holy Cross, you&#8217;re my<br \/>\nnumber one choice .. I love you more than anywhere else (and, well, after you<br \/>\nvisit here, how would you <em>not<\/em> be able to say that!?) .. and if you take<br \/>\nme, I guarantee I&#8217;ll enroll, and will withdraw all of my other college<br \/>\napplications whether I&#8217;ve received a decision from them yet or not.&#8221;<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s a pretty big statement to make, right?\u00a0 Even with that said, ED can<br \/>\nbe an absolutely terrific process to go through &#8230; but you just absolutely<br \/>\nhave to know 110% that this is where you want to be, and know that you won&#8217;t be<br \/>\nchanging your mind later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Why is ED\u00a0so terrific?\u00a0 For one, you&#8217;ll find out<br \/>\nour decision much earlier than if you were Regular Admission.\u00a0 This is<br \/>\ncalled &#8220;rolling notification&#8221;.\u00a0 Our decision process typically<br \/>\ntakes about four weeks <em>from the time your application becomes complete<\/em>.<br \/>\nMany times it happens somewhat quicker than that, but four weeks is an<br \/>\naverage.\u00a0 We can make three possible decisions with your ED application:<br \/>\n&#8220;Accept&#8221; (Congratulations, you&#8217;re coming here!); &#8220;Defer&#8221;,<br \/>\nwhich simply means we&#8217;re moving your application to the Regular Admission pool,<br \/>\nand you&#8217;ll now learn your final decision alongside all of the Regular Admission<br \/>\ncandidates (you&#8217;ll still be notified of the &#8220;Defer&#8221; decision within<br \/>\napproximately 4 weeks); or &#8220;Not Admit&#8221;.\u00a0 Whatever the decision,<br \/>\nwe utilize a rolling notification so that you, the student, will know how to<br \/>\nproceed with any other application\u00a0you were considering submitting &#8211; &#8211;<br \/>\neither to move forward with them and make sure they&#8217;re all complete, or<br \/>\nwithdraw them because <strong><em>you&#8217;re coming to Holy Cross!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If you decide to apply Regular Admission [deadline: January<br \/>\n15] you will receive your decision letter in the mail either in the last few<br \/>\ndays of March or first few days of April.\u00a0 While this seems like a long<br \/>\ntime away, trust me, it will be here\u00a0before you know it.\u00a0 Applying<br \/>\nRegular Admission keeps all of your options open, and allows you to consider<br \/>\nall of your admission decisions from all the schools to which you&#8217;ve applied<br \/>\nuntil May 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There are certainly pros and cons to both application<br \/>\nprocesses.\u00a0 Because Early Decision is such a personal choice, and a big<br \/>\ncommitment, its a decision we can&#8217;t answer for you &#8230; only you, the student,<br \/>\ncan know for sure that this is the place you would like to attend for the next<br \/>\nfour years, and be connected with for the rest of your life.\u00a0 Best of luck<br \/>\nwith your process, however you choose to apply, and never hesitate to ask us<br \/>\nquestions as you go through it &#8211; &#8211; that&#8217;s why we&#8217;re here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Finally, if you&#8217;re eligible to do so, <strong>get out and VOTE<\/strong><br \/>\non Tuesday &#8230; this is history in the making!<\/p>\n<p>James T.
