{"id":33,"date":"2008-10-07T05:43:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-07T09:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/2008\/10\/07\/the-best-college-visit-ever\/"},"modified":"2008-10-07T05:43:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-07T09:43:00","slug":"the-best-college-visit-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2008\/10\/07\/the-best-college-visit-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"The Best College Visit Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;float: left\" src=\"http:\/\/me.holycross.edu\/blogimages\/drew.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Drew\" \/><br \/>\nThe last few weeks have certainly been a blur as all of us in the Admissions Office have crisscrossed the country visiting high schools, meeting with guidance counselors and chatting with perspective students.\u00a0 Regardless of what city we\u2019re in, one thing stays consistent for all of us \u2013 they\u2019re just aren\u2019t enough hours in the day to get all of the work done.\u00a0 In that way, we have something in common with all those high school seniors that we are meeting with on the road \u2013 many of them seem overwhelmed by the combination of the commitments in the classroom and the pressure of the application process.\u00a0 There simply isn\u2019t enough time to get it all done and this carries over into their college visits.\u00a0 The family pours out of the car, runs to catch the tour, the information session and then sprints back to the car to make it home to write essays and finish homework.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m here today to call upon everyone just to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously \u2013 slow down.<\/p>\n<p>Holy Cross alum and former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins said the following about education:<\/p>\n<p><em>Although teaching and learning themselves have been motorized by the hyper-pace of information, it is good to remember that the true tempo of education has always involved a deceleration. . . .\u00a0 a shift from the urgencies and demands of the world to the more leisurely pace of discussion, the cadence of study and reflection, the seeming stop-time of engrossed thought.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, when visiting colleges this fall, instead of sprinting from car to tour to info session to car, you should encourage your family to simply slow down.\u00a0 Schedule your visits so there\u2019s enough time to linger, to truly experience a college.\u00a0 The most valuable insight from a college visit often comes when you\u2019re not looking for it \u2013 a door held for you when you least expect it;
