{"id":344,"date":"2009-09-07T21:48:09","date_gmt":"2009-09-08T01:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/?p=344"},"modified":"2009-09-07T21:48:09","modified_gmt":"2009-09-08T01:48:09","slug":"three-cups-of-tea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2009\/09\/07\/three-cups-of-tea\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Cups of Tea"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8216;Here we drink three cups of tea to do business; the first you are a stranger, the second you become a friend, and the third, you join our family, and for our family we are prepared to do anything &#8211; even die.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-345\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2009\/09\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi-104x150.jpg\" alt=\"6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi\" width=\"104\" height=\"150\" \/>This quote is the inspiration for the title of the New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea, the remarkable story of Greg Mortenson and his commitment to build schools and improve lives in the poorest villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for <a href=\"http:\/\/college.holycross.edu\/grants\/lilly\/2yo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Mortenson\u2019s visit to Holy Cross at the end of September\u00a0<\/a>, I\u2019ve been reading his book.\u00a0 The more I read, the more I realize that there are so many lessons contained within \u2013 commitment, honor, the value of hard work, respect, etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps the one lesson that has stuck with me the most is the lesson of perseverance.\u00a0 Without reading the book, you might imagine that Mr. Mortenson decided to build schools and simply did it.\u00a0 It was not that easy.\u00a0<br \/>\nIn building his first school, he had to deal with an unfamiliar foreign land, coming up with enough money, time constraints, missing supplies, etc.\u00a0 It was no easy task.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, as you sit down to write your Common Application essay, remember the lesson of perseverance.\u00a0 You might struggle with an unfamiliar format, coming up with an idea, time constraints, missing ideas, etc.\u00a0 An essay that you can be proud of is not likely to simply appear on your computer; but know that if you invest your time, effort and hard work, you will succeed.\u00a0 If you persevere, your efforts will be rewarded with an essay of which you can be proud.\u00a0 Hard work always pays off.<\/p>\n<p>Greg Mortenson knows this to be true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The children who attend his schools know this to be true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You do, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>See also: <a href=\"http:\/\/college.holycross.edu\/committees\/hanify-howland\/upcoming_lecture.html\">http:\/\/college.holycross.edu\/committees\/hanify-howland\/upcoming_lecture.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andrew N.
