{"id":48,"date":"2008-03-31T08:58:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-31T12:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/2008\/03\/31\/choosing-the-college-for-you\/"},"modified":"2008-03-31T08:58:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-31T12:58:00","slug":"choosing-the-college-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2008\/03\/31\/choosing-the-college-for-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Choosing the College For You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/me.holycross.edu\/blogimages\/tran.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Tran\" \/> After months of waiting and waiting for a response from colleges, you couldn\u2019t wait for this month to arrive when the admissions decisions come out.\u00a0 But now you realize that you have another daunting task ahead of you.\u00a0 The tables have now turned and you\u2019re the ones making the admissions decision and determining who will get in, if you will (hopefully this means a bit more sympathy for us and the hard decisions we\u2019ve had to make).<\/p>\n<p>Some of you will know immediately where you\u2019ll go.\u00a0 Others of you may at least know where you will not go.\u00a0 But many of you, I\u2019m guessing, are completely overwhelmed with the decision ahead.\u00a0 I mean this is where you\u2019ll be spending the next four years of your life, and sure, transferring is always an option but who wants to go through the admissions cycle again?\u00a0 If you thought it was hard this time around, believe me when I tell you that it\u2019s even harder the second time around, i.e. fewer spaces available, even less money for financial aid, etc.\u00a0 So this is it.<\/p>\n<p>Though it is somewhat a huge commitment you\u2019re making, it\u2019s not as scary as it seems.\u00a0 Let me try to put some perspective on it.\u00a0 I equate this decision to marriage.\u00a0 We all have our vision of what the ideal partner is but all know in the back of our minds, that we all seldom end up with someone who matches every criteria on that list of credentials that we want.\u00a0 Marriage isn\u2019t about finding a perfect match (even those who say they have the perfect partner will admit that there are less than perfect days).\u00a0 Likewise, finding the college for you isn\u2019t about finding the perfect fit but about finding the best fit.\u00a0 You can\u2019t have it all unfortunately so it\u2019s about figuring out what matters most to you, what you absolutely can\u2019t do without.\u00a0 So for example, if size is the most important thing to you, then narrow down your school options by that.\u00a0 If location is the most important criteria for you, then narrow down the list that way and so forth.\u00a0 Prioritize your criteria and start narrowing down your options in rounds.\u00a0 So if size is the most important thing, cross off schools that don\u2019t fit the bill in the first round.\u00a0 If location is the next most important thing, then cross off other schools that don\u2019t fit the bill.\u00a0 Hopefully that\u2019ll give you a smaller list of schools for you to take a closer look into and decide.<\/p>\n<p>But remember that at the end of the day, you\u2019ll be happy and successful wherever you go.\u00a0 It\u2019s all a matter of what you do while you\u2019re there.\u00a0 People who go to highly selective schools don\u2019t automatically end up being successful.\u00a0 They have to work hard to become successful.\u00a0 Likewise, students who attend less selective schools don\u2019t end up less successful either.\u00a0 So don\u2019t let that be a deciding factor for you.\u00a0 Happy deciding and good luck!<\/p>\n<p>Tran Kim-Senior<br \/>\nAssistant Director of Admissions<br \/>\nCoordinator of Multicultural Recruitment<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After months of waiting and waiting for a response from colleges, you couldn\u2019t wait for this month to arrive when the admissions decisions come out.\u00a0 But now you realize that you have another daunting task ahead of you.\u00a0 The tables have now turned and you\u2019re the ones making the admissions decision and determining who will &hellip;
