{"id":703,"date":"2010-08-18T04:07:07","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T08:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/?p=703"},"modified":"2010-08-18T04:07:07","modified_gmt":"2010-08-18T08:07:07","slug":"the-cupertino-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2010\/08\/18\/the-cupertino-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cupertino Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2009\/09\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-345\" title=\"6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2009\/09\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi-104x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"104\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>If you search the website of the United Nations, you\u2019ll find a fascinating article on African-German Cupertino; in another article, you can read about peace education that stresses participation, problem solving and Cupertino.<\/p>\n<p>Still have time on your hands?\u00a0 Another search will bring you to an article on political, economic and trade Cupertino in the Balkans.<\/p>\n<p>What is Cupertino, you ask?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s a city in California.\u00a0 But for our purposes, it\u2019s proof that spell-check is not always correct.<\/p>\n<p>You see, early versions of spell-check did not recognize the word \u201ccooperation\u201d; it only knew the word to be spelled with a hyphen: \u201cco-operation\u201d.\u00a0 Like any misspelled word, spell check recommended alternative spellings, the first of which was the now famous town in California.\u00a0 Inattentive writers (even in the UN!) frequently hit \u201cchange all\u201d without proof reading the spell-check selection.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson here?\u00a0 Today is August 18<sup>th<\/sup> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonapp.org\/CommonApp\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Application<\/a> has been available for a few weeks. As you begin working on your essay, remember that spell-check is a handy tool but that your eyes and the eyes of a proofreader with perspective are the only way to make sure that your thoughts come across effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your Cupertino.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew N.
