{"id":807,"date":"2010-11-23T11:23:24","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T15:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/?p=807"},"modified":"2010-11-23T11:23:24","modified_gmt":"2010-11-23T15:23:24","slug":"i-read-my-first-application-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2010\/11\/23\/i-read-my-first-application-today\/","title":{"rendered":"I Read My First Application Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2009\/09\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-345\" title=\"6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2009\/09\/6a00e54ed0db8e8833010536f8f30b970b-800wi-104x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"104\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I read my first application today.<\/p>\n<p>I de-constructed the transcript.\u00a0 I read, evaluated and summarized the recommendations.\u00a0 I read through the interview evaluation.\u00a0 I summarized the extra-curricular activities.<\/p>\n<p>And then I got to the essay.<\/p>\n<p>It was at that point that I turned the calculator off; I pushed my laptop to the side.\u00a0 I minimized the spreadsheet and put my pencil down.<\/p>\n<p>I sat back in my chair and I read.<\/p>\n<p>Up until that point, I\u2019d been evaluating data and building a composite of who this student is, using a collection of sources, mainly<strong> other people&#8217;s <\/strong> voices.\u00a0 The essay was my first chance to hear the <strong>student\u2019s voice<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I was making a painting of the student and all of a sudden, the paintbrush was in the student\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, the rest of the file made sense.\u00a0 Suddenly, I had a sense of who this student is.\u00a0\u00a0 Suddenly, it was time to pick up the pencil, turn on the calculator and move on to the next application.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew N.
