{"id":993,"date":"2011-10-28T11:58:50","date_gmt":"2011-10-28T15:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admissions.me.holycross.edu\/?p=993"},"modified":"2011-10-28T11:58:50","modified_gmt":"2011-10-28T15:58:50","slug":"college-essay-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/2011\/10\/28\/college-essay-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"College Essay Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2010\/10\/Daniel-Weagle_post.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-776\" title=\"Daniel-Weagle_post\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2010\/10\/Daniel-Weagle_post.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"105\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>As you are putting the finishing touches on your college essay, let me give you some tips to proofread by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t make the mistake of taking a backseat in your own essay.<\/strong> Your transcript is about you, your recommendations are about you, your interview is about you, and, thus, your College Essay should be about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">you<\/span>.<strong> <\/strong> If you want to write about someone important who was a positive influence in your life, you should let your reader know how <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">you<\/span> were influenced \u2013 how <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">your<\/span> life changed.\u00a0 The focus of your essay should <strong>NOT<\/strong> be about all the great things your Grammy did and how you hope to be like her some day.\u00a0 Too much focus on Grammy will make us Admissions Counselors want to admit your Grammy and we will completely forget about you!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proofread, proofread, profreed (whoops, *proofread* \u2013 see it\u2019s important).<\/strong> Proofread is not the same as Spellcheck.\u00a0 Ask solid writers who are familiar with your voice and your style to read your essay in order to correct grammatical errors, offer advice, and make suggestions.\u00a0 These proofreaders should be mom, dad, a mentor, that great English teacher you had last year, your best friend, etc.\u00a0 All of these people know you. They know your style, your voice, your humor. \u00a0They know what you are trying to say and they want to help you say it in a concise and efficient manner.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Punctuation goes INSIDE of quotations.<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t put punctuation outside of quotations,\u201d cried the pained Admissions Counselor, \u201cbecause I don\u2019t enjoy reading it.\u201d\u00a0 Follow that example and you\u2019ll be golden in most American English scenarios (if you speak\/write British English, then disregard, good neighbour).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is not a complete list of tips.\u00a0 See your local MLA manual, English teacher, and Guidance Counselor for a full list of do\u2019s and do-not\u2019s for the college essay.<\/p>\n<p>Cheers,<\/p>\n<p>Dan Weagle \u201808<\/p>\n<p>Admissions Counselor<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you are putting the finishing touches on your college essay, let me give you some tips to proofread by: Don\u2019t make the mistake of taking a backseat in your own essay.
