1.Tell us about where you interned over the summer and the kind of work you are doing.

I interned at a Mass Audubon Center in Newburyport this summer. There I cared for over 40 species of animals. I fed them and regulated the water chemistry of 30-gallon and 100-gallon saltwater tanks. Also, I led programs educating families about marine life.  I gave presentations, and facilitated opportunities where visitors could hold our animals. Additionally, I went on numerous trips to collect marine animals from around New England such as Plum Island, York Beach, and Gloucester.

 

 

2. Give us an example of how you have applied your academic learnings to your internship?

My internship required a detailed knowledge of the anatomy, phylogeny, and environments of the animals housed at the center. My previous coursework in biology and chemistry at Holy Cross gave me extensive knowledge in these areas, which allowed me to be confident and prepared in my internship.

3. What has surprised you about being an intern?

What surprised me about being an intern was how much I enjoyed it! The other interns and employees shared the same passion for animals and the environment as I have. I had fun in bonding with the other interns, going on tidepooling trips, and even in the grunt work like cleaning the tanks.

4. How did this experience influence or connect to your future career plans / goals?

This experience made me interested in a career path working with animals. Before my internship I had a passion for biology, but I had no idea what path I wanted to follow. Now that I have experience with caring for animals, I know I want to incorporate that into my career hunt for the future.

5. Any internship advice to pass on to other Holy Cross students?

My advice to other Holy Cross Students is take every opportunity you can to experience something new. A like or dislike are both equally valuable when looking towards a future career.

Turkeys need Cover Letter’s too!

So it is the week before Thanksgiving Break!

A great time for food, family and football. (Wooo!) But before we go, your friends in Hogan 203 have some news to share concerning our old buddy Thomas the turkey.

Ever since I was a younger turk, my family praised the joy of Thanksgiving. Having the opportunity to be out on the float and share that experience with viewers all around the world is a task I would be honored to do. Timmy Turkey, Director of Turkey Relations suggested that I contact you regarding the open Float Model position available at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade 2013. My educational background at Holy Cross, along with my professional experience as a Turkey, makes me an excellent candidate for this position.

I have more than 5 years of experience in the field of float modeling . My resume shows that I have been consistently volunteering at Big Turkey, Little Turkey since 2009. While volunteering there I mentored young turkeys and last year I lead an entire 5K race right down Madison Ave for underprivileged turkeys and raised $2000. The experience of planning such a successful and charitable event was a direct result of my commitment to professional excellence . In my spare time while at Holy Cross, I was editor of the weekly newspaper titled, The Crusader. I created a “Vegan Corner” column in the paper for students to participate in healthier eating choices while at the college. This healthy lifestyle column reflects my passion for maintaining a nice figure around the holidays. I do not want this position solely due to my ability to look good on a dinner plate. My years of experience coupled with my passion for exuding thanksgiving culture well qualify me for the float model position in the Macy’s parade.

Summer Internships 2012!

Time to start thinking about what you’re going to do next summer!

The first and only application deadline for the
Holy Cross Summer Internship Program (SIP)
is quickly approaching on
Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 11:59 pm EDT.

SIP offers paid summer opportunities primarily in the northeast. Internships will be available in advertising, the arts, communications, consumer products, education, financial services, marketing, medicine, non-profit, publishing, public relations, research and social services, among many others.

Here is how application to the program works:

  • The only application deadline for the SIP is Thursday, October 6 at 11:59 pm EDT.
    You must submit a resume, a cover letter (stating your career interest(s) and aspirations, why you wish to do an internship, what you hope to gain from an internship and what you can contribute to an internship site) and an unofficial transcript (cut and pasted into a Word document from STAR) via CrusaderConnections
  • Applicants’ student records will also be accessed by SIP.
  • Students will then be selected for interviews. If selected, you will be contacted via email to schedule a brief interview.

If admitted to SIP you will apply for the specific internships housed within the Program via CrusaderConnections.

Please join us for the Third Annual Summer Internship Program Poster Session on Monday, September 12, 2011 from 4:00-5:30 pm in Hogan 320.

Please have your resume and cover letter critiqued in Career Planning, Hogan 203, during drop-in hours, Monday – Friday, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Students typically go through four revisions before their application is ready for submission to SIP. The quality of your resume and cover letter are the most important factors of your candidacy.
