{"id":1027,"date":"2013-10-11T15:58:08","date_gmt":"2013-10-11T15:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careerplanning.me.holycross.edu\/?p=1027"},"modified":"2013-10-11T15:58:08","modified_gmt":"2013-10-11T15:58:08","slug":"networking-101-take-a-minute-to-learn-the-art-of-networking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/careerplanning\/2013\/10\/11\/networking-101-take-a-minute-to-learn-the-art-of-networking\/","title":{"rendered":"NETWORKING 101: Take A Minute to Learn the Art of Networking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How many times have you heard the expression: <b><i>\u201cIt&#8217;s not what you know, it&#8217;s who you know?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<address>Well the age old expression comes from the basic premise that Networking is key to landing a solid career!<\/address>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<p>When asked the best way for someone to break into a given career, the typical response deals with an old friend or family member, ex boyfriend, or co-worker who graciously passed an opportunity along.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing someone who knows someone is undoubtedly central to success. So learning the tools necessary to land a list of contacts who are working in the fields we are pursuing \u00a0is very important.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em><strong>NETWORK, \u00a0NETWORK, NETWORK!<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>What does it mean?<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Normally when people think of networking, it&#8217;s all about business cards and shaking hands&#8230;and though that is true, networking is not a mere exchange of business cards at a career fair nor is it begging for jobs from people you barely know. The WASHINGTON POST defines <span style=\"color: #800000\">networking as,\u00a0<em>&#8220;building relationships on the basis of trust that involves a give and take.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">More simply put, networking means reaching out to people you already know AND forming new connections with various professionals.<\/span><\/address>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Why is it important to network?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As my\u00a0high school\u00a0counselor famously said<em>: Networking is not optional&#8230;<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<em>Networking is not optional!!<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And she was correct. Networking is not optional&#8230; <em>anymore<\/em>&#8230;\u00a0<strong>it is crucial<\/strong> to reaching success in any field.<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s workforce finding a job is not as simple as attending a job fair or sending out a killer resume. The job market is VERY competitive \u00a0and people who know people in the right positions are going to get jobs.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible to get entry level positions by going through the normal application process, but very often when it comes to landing higher level positions, having an inside contact will make all the difference.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ways to Start<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One very simple way of networking is developing a professional online presence through sites like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">LinkedIn<\/span>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">SimplyHired<\/span>, or any other career recruitment website. Social media provides a space for you to showcase your experiences\/accomplishments with potential employers without meeting face to face.<\/p>\n<h6><em>{Although some websites may advertise job recruitment, be aware of which sites you are giving personal information to<\/em>}<\/h6>\n<p>#<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">DoYourReseach<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before applying to any job posting\/internship\/career fair\/program look up as much information as you can on the company or organization. You should be familiar with companies that peak your interest and answer basic questions like: What are they about? \u00a0What is their mission?
