{"id":1048,"date":"2013-10-30T15:50:21","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T15:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careerplanning.me.holycross.edu\/?p=1048"},"modified":"2013-10-30T15:50:21","modified_gmt":"2013-10-30T15:50:21","slug":"what-not-to-wear-edition-dont-let-your-wardrobe-spook-your-employers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.holycross.edu\/careerplanning\/2013\/10\/30\/what-not-to-wear-edition-dont-let-your-wardrobe-spook-your-employers\/","title":{"rendered":"What Not to Wear Edition: Don&#8217;t let your wardrobe SPOOK your Employers!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><em>Muhahahahaaa<\/em>!<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">I<\/span><\/b>t is the week of <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>H<\/b><\/span>a<span style=\"color: #ff6600\">l<\/span>l<span style=\"color: #ff6600\">o<\/span>w<span style=\"color: #ff6600\">e<\/span>e<span style=\"color: #ff6600\">n<\/span> and all across the hill students may hear the cry\u2019s from the ghost of <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b><i>&#8220;What Not To Wear&#8221;<\/i><\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">.<\/span>..who Howls in the night at the thought of Holy Cross students wearing \u00a0ridiculous outfits to professional events.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soooo to avoid having the ghost of <b><i>&#8220;What Not To Wear&#8221; <\/i><\/b>haunt\u00a0 you in<\/p>\n<p>your dreams, let\u2019s use this opportunity to have a refresher on the basics of dressing to impress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First things first\u2026the Ghost has something major to say <b><i>\u201c<span style=\"color: #ff6600\">NOOO<\/span> jeans, <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">NO<\/span> sneakers, <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">NO<\/span> flip-flops,<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"> NO<\/span> excessive jewelry and<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"> NOOOO<\/span> bodily piercings or marks <\/i><\/b>\u00a0are recommended for dressing for success. You\u2019re welcome to dress in these articles before and after the interview\/event but absolutely not during!<b>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For an interview, the ghost has a general rule of thumb\u00a0<b><i>\u201cyou can never be overdressed.\u201d<\/i><\/b> You only have a short period of time to be assessed by the potential employer and you best make it work! Important to remember that you&#8217;re being assess on more than just your outfit. While you want to convey professionalism through your dress, you don\u2019t want to be remembered for having spent too long putting together an outfit but being under qualified for the job.<\/p>\n<p><b>H<\/b>ere are the basics for putting together your wardrobe before an occasion.<\/p>\n<h5>(If you already own these items, GREAT!&#8230;If not, you may want to make some effort to at least <b><i>have one set of professional clothes in you closet just in case<\/i><\/b> you are ever asked to throw it on.)<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Men: (Fairly Simple)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 Basic suit with neutral color and white button down shirt.<\/li>\n<li>Simple Tie neutral colored<\/li>\n<li>DARK colored socks (Don\u2019t Let the Ghost catch you wearing WHITE)<\/li>\n<li>Leather dress shoes<\/li>\n<li>PRESS EVERYTHING! <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;text-decoration: underline\">NOOOO<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #ff6600\">O<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;text-decoration: underline\"> WRINKLES<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Women:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conservative Dress\/skirt (Knee-Length) or ironed business slacks with a blouse<\/li>\n<li>NO LOUD colors! (this includes any jewelry, nails and hair)<\/li>\n<li>Limit the perfume &amp; amount of jewelry on hands\/neck<\/li>\n<li>Simple hairstyle (<em><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Nooo<\/span><\/em> fixing hair during interview!)<\/li>\n<li>Simple heels or flats (<em><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">No<\/span><\/em> dancing heels!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Outside of an interview setting, it is very important to remain professionally dressed in the workplace. You may see the term <b>\u201cBusiness Casual\u201d <\/b>in some places as the desired attire for a particular event or occasion. It is important to also understand what this means so you\u2019re not <i>too<\/i> casual.<\/p>\n<p>Though business casual does blend the personal with the professional it really exists to make people feel more comfortable and be their most productive!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>F<\/b><b>or M<\/b><b>en<\/b>:<\/span> business casual usually means skipping the suit jacket and tie for a simple look that consist <b>of a pressed collared shirt<\/b>, usually <b>tucked in<\/b> a pair of <b>dress pants<\/b> all complemented nicely with <b>a belt.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>F<\/b><b>or W<\/b><b>omen: <\/b><\/span>generally women can wear any type of skirt or dress with a hem that is past the knee or a tailored pair of dress pants with a blouse that isn\u2019t too revealing. Closed-toed shoes are recommended, though heels and flats are always acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Although it may seem like we are trying to quash your self-expression\u2026Were not! \u00a0There are many ways to dress professionally and still incorporate\u00a0your own style.\u00a0Remember that dressing conservatively does not mean you cannot be stylish! You just want to make sure that the interviews remember you because of you r great answers,not your weird appearance.
