Everywhere you look, brands are touting their online presence in order to connect with their customers in a deep, more interactive way.\u00a0 As you\u2019re in the midst of searching for a job or internship, it\u2019s important to realize how your social media activity reflects the personal brand you\u2019re trying to convey to potential employers. Thus, here are our Friends &amp; Foes in the social media world.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff\">Best Friend: LINKEDIN<\/span> <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get a LinkedIn\u2026.. Did you get a LinkedIn yet? \u2026. How about now?<\/p>\n<p>Now you may ask: why does LinkedIn need to be my BFF? On a basic level, LinkedIn is the Facebook of the corporate world: it\u2019s a networking platform, an online resume and a career searching tool in ONE. Bob McIntosh of <em>Things Career Related<\/em> lays out 10 facts you should know about this social media site in order to boost your career search. It\u2019s about making connections, not just numbers!<\/li>\n<li>List something in your work history, even if it\u2019s a job or internship unrelated to your desired industry<\/li>\n<li><strong>PROOFREAD<\/strong>\u2026. Spelling errors count on online profiles too<\/li>\n<li>Link your blog or professional works to your page!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>FRENEMY: Facebook &amp; Twitter <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No one is trying to strip these popular social media sites of their valor, but proceed with caution. Regularly check your privacy settings and THINK before you post. It\u2019s not a myth that many HR recruiters and employers actively seek out their candidates on search engines and\/or social media platforms to get a better sense of who they may hire. Try googling yourself as a baseline check. Our message is by no means telling you to delete your accounts\u2026 in fact, some media, communications and PR positions want you to access Facebook for market research on consumer companies! Take home message: BE SMART!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>FRIEND: The Bloggosphere <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blogging signifies your knowledge of online platforms (WordPress, BlogSpot, etc) and willingness to put your ideas and writing style in the public eye. As long as your content is not inappropriate, your blog posts can also show a side of your personality that might not emerge during the interview process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong><em>POTENTIAL<\/em> MORTAL ENEMY: Facebook Open Graph <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although we already listed Facebook as a \u201cfrenemy,\u201d we felt the need to re-list it as the potential \u201cDarth Vader\u201d of the Social Media world, especially in light of new technology. As of this month, Facebook\u2019s new search optimization tool \u201cOpen Graph\u201d allows Facebook users to perform detailed searches and virtually target any of your information not explicitly set to private, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/thesocialmediamonthly.com\/why-facebooks-open-graph-search-can-be-a-job-seekers-worst-nightmare\/\">The Social Media Monthly<\/a>. \u00a0Based on the current \u201cPrivacy Settings\u201d format, here are some recommendations you should consider <strong>ASAP<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Under \u201cWho Can See My Stuff\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Change <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Who Can See Your Future Posts?<\/span>from \u201cEveryone\u201d to \u201cFriends\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Set <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Review all of your posts and things you\u2019re tagged in<\/span><strong> <\/strong>to \u201cActivity Log\u201d so you can pre-approve posts before they show up on your Timeline<\/li>\n<li>Under <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Limit the Audience for posts you\u2019ve shared with friends of friends or the public<\/span>, click \u201cLimit Past Posts\u201d \u2026.That way you\u2019re past posts are private!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Under \u201cWho Can Look Me Up\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Who can look you up using the email address or phone number you provided<\/span>, it is really up to you.
