Spring Break: Or There And Back Again

Yes, I spent my Senior year Spring break in the lovely little town of Oxford (have you heard of it?). As one of my friends asked me, “Wait. Spring break. Isn’t that where all you Americans go to Florida or something?” Well, I decided to go back to Oxford since the national collegiate dancesport competition was last Saturday (seriously? It’s already been a week?) and I wanted to support my friends. I was so supportive that I was watching them dance instead of taking photos of them. Whoops. But, Oxford did win the trophy again (take that, Cambridge)! It was hilarious, though, because some of my friends didn’t recognize me with my new hairstyle (the last time they saw me, I had short red hair) or without my dance shoes on (haha).

Look at all of that shiny hardware! I stole this photo from one of my friends, David. Thanks, David!

No, I didn’t dance – shocker, right? It was great to see all of my friends dance to another victory, but it was a weird experience as well. I didn’t have to get up at 5:00 a.m. or apply loads of make-up – I just sat and watched. It was kind of relaxing, actually.

I spent the rest of my time in Oxford, which probably doesn’t surprise any of you.

Love.

Me at Mansfield College.

I stayed with my good friend, Yszi, and I introduced her to the marvels of American cooking, like Funfetti cake and American-style pancakes.

This is Yszi cooking for me and trying to convince me that Brits can cook. Well, she can, but she doesn’t count.

Just a note: Nutella on pancakes is wonderful.

I was able to catch up with a lot of my very good friends from last year, including:

Lorna, who was my adopted little sister. Mansfield College provides every new student with a “family,” and Lorna was Carrie’s “little sister.” Well, all of the JYAs eventually adopted Lorna, and we’re fairly sure that she’ll jump across the pond to join us permanently some day.

Jess and Jo, who are two of my friends from Neil’s dance school.

Melissa, who is actually a Holy Cross student and my mini-me. Seriously. She is me…but with brown curly hair. I brought her some American delicacies, such as Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and…

Funfetti cake mix. The Brits do not understand our cult-like obsession with this cake mix, by the way.

I was also able to see Emily P., who is a Holy Cross student currently studying at Mansfield. She joined the Oxford Ballroom team and continued the tradition of a Holy Cross girl always being on the team (well, since 2008). We actually never knew each other at Holy Cross, but we’ve bonded through our similar experience on Oxford’s dance team.

Me with Neil and Emily. Yes, Neil always has that evil smirk on his face, and it usually means that he’s going to torture an innocent American girl by making her do cha-cha lock steps up and down the hall for thirty minutes. I am, unfortunately, not speaking from Emily’s experience, but from my own. Seriously, when Neil picked me up from the airport last Friday morning, the first question he asked me after the typical niceties was, “So, how’s the dancing going? How much do I need to fix this time?” Ah, dance coaches.

This Crazy Break

I must admit that this Christmas break is not turning out to be the relaxing break that I had in mind. As you know from my last post, I found out that my beloved pastor, Msgr. Reynolds, passed away on the first day of my break. That was pretty shocking.

We then left for Houston, where we celebrated Christmas with my mom’s family.

Getting a ticket to this Christmas dinner table is extremely coveted. My mom’s side is French, and the food literally does not stop coming until you go to the airport for your return flight home. That’s when you realize how much weight you’ve gained in the past two days and now you need an extra seat.

That proceeded as normal, except with one twist. My aunt Sue is a huge benefactor of the Houston Zoo, and she was able to arrange a special behind-the-scenes tour for us. We were able to feed giraffes and pet elephants. It was so cool. They’re magnificent creatures to see so close.

I realize that this photo isn’t of a giraffe, but I had to post it. See, this is my wonderful sister, Caitie, who recently graduated from Colgate. Anyway, in this photo, she looks like the crazy one and I love the look of “Are you sure we’re related?” that I’m giving her. Usually, it’s the reverse.

This is me feeding Diva, who is…well, a diva.

Then we came back to Atlanta, and I started to feel quite sick. I was doing a pretty good job of taking care of myself, but then New Year’s Day, I was completely gone. My parents and I started to attribute it to the fast pace of this past semester, but something was wrong. Really wrong. Then, on Monday, I woke up with blood coming out of my ear. After a rush to the doctor’s, it turns out that I contracted strep throat…in my sinuses. I’m not sure how that’s even possible, but I’m living proof that it can happen. Apparently, my body was trying to force it out…through my ear, which resulted in a ruptured ear drum, which resulted in the blood. So. Merry Christmas!

All in all, I’m glad that this happened when I was at home and not when I was about to get on a plane to go back to Holy Cross. I’m also really glad that this happened this year instead of last year (I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done if this happened when I was in England). But the most depressing thing about this sickness is that it’s affected my equilibrium, which means…no dancing for a bit. 🙁 Oh well. Happy Christmas Break!

More Good-Byes

Just when I thought I was finished saying goodbye, I received a phone call shortly after I arrived home. My pastor, Msgr. Reynolds, passed away this afternoon. Msgr. Reynolds was a very close friend of the family, and he was always interested in my education (between the Jesuit affiliation and my stint at Oxford, he was convinced that I’m a masochist…which I am). I told him once about my Latin class and how much we were translating, and he simply looked up and said in a thick Irish brogue, “Oh, Laard above.” He loved hearing about my Oxford stories, as well – I even brought him back a scarf from Blackfriars (a Dominican college at Oxford) since he loved that particular college so much.

This is not exactly how I wanted to start my Christmas break. Then again, I’m grateful that I’ll be able to say this good-bye. Wow. Growing up is painful.

Where In the World is Colleen?

Wow. I feel like I haven’t been on here in quite some time. To make up for this and get you all up to speed quickly, this is going to be a photo entry.

First, I was in San Diego, California to present at the 32nd annual Association for Integrative Studies Conference.

I think that the location kind of helped my decision to go to the conference.

At the conference, Professor Matlak and I argued for the establishment of a national honors society for those students with interdisciplinary (or multidisciplinary…however you choose to look at it) majors. Our presentation was well received, and the board is going to review our proposal. Hopefully there will be such an establishment within the next few years!

Then, I went home for a few days, where I made s’mores and slept.

Then I came back to Holy Cross to compete and cheer on the rest of the team at the Harvard Ballroom Competition.

My grandmother and Mom came to watch.

Yes, I have long hair when I compete in ballroom.

Then I came back to beautiful Holy Cross…

…to work on my thesis.

Then I had loads of papers, exams, and applications to do. When I blinked my eyes, it was Halloween.

Yes, I went as Scrabble.

And that’s my whirlwind life for the past month or so!

Spending October in the Sunshine

Hello from beautiful San Diego!

I’m currently enjoying the 80 degree weather and the cloudless day. This is absolutely gorgeous.

I’m here for the 32nd Annual Association for Integrated Studies Conference, where Professor Matlak and I are presenting the necessity for a national honors society for undergraduates with an interdisciplinary major. The conference received our presentation very well, and we’re now moving forward with the program. I’m going to create a protoype society at Holy Cross to hammer out the Constitution and by-laws for other schools to use our group as a template. It’s all very exciting!

And, now, I’m headed back to Georgia for some rest over this Columbus Day week-long break. But not before I enjoy the San Diego sunshine for just a few more minutes. 🙂
