Historiography and the Archives: Deaf History as Archival Practice

 

R.A.R. Edwards ’90, Professor of History at Rochester Institute of Technology, discusses historiography using the Deaf Catholic Archives as a model to demonstrate the opportunities and advantages, as well as the challenges and obstacles, that researchers encounter when using archival collections.

This lecture is co-sponsored by Archives & Distinctive Collections and the McFarland Center as part of the symposium “Signs of Hope: The Claggett Statement and Deaf Theology Today.”

From model ships to ashtrays and ceramic figurines, come see what has been hiding out in Dinand Library!

Students in classes of the Visual Arts and Classics Department are contributing to the documentation of the college and its history by animating and photographing objects in Dinand and the Archives.

This event represents a joint collaboration between Archives and Distinctive Collections, the Visual Arts Department, and the Classics Department. Students in “Digital Art Studio 2” and “Photographing Antiquity” will be sharing their work.

Snacks and refreshments provided.

First Year Student’s Information Literacy Skills

Learn about First Year students’ skills and abilities when it comes to library use, research, and information literacy!

Incoming first-year students, class of 2028, responded to a survey in Summer 2024 asking about their information literacy skills and abilities. What we learned: Of those students who responded (58%), they reported strong skills in the ability to identify the authority of sources, but more difficulty citing sources.

The Science Library and Archives/Distinctive Collections are creating a collaborative 3D coral reef to raise awareness about the beauty and challenges of coral ecosystems. 🐠✨

🎨 How You Can Help:

Create a 3D coral reef piece with materials like yarn, papier-mâché, or 3D printing!
Yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles, and patterns are available at the Science Library starting January 21.
📅 Submit your completed pieces by April 14, 2025 to the Science Library.
