Archives & Distinctive Collections is pleased to announce the publication of a chapter in Preserving Disability: Disability and the Archival Profession, (Litwin Press, 2024) “From Collecting to Curating: The History and Mission of the Deaf Catholic Archives”.
This chapter was written by our very own Abby Stambach, Lisa Villa and former assistant to the Archives Corinne Tabolt, with contributions by Rev. Joseph Bruce, SJ. to examine the history, current status and future plans of the DCA.
Additionally, the chapter discusses the challenges for a non-archivist of managing an archive and how those challenges were met, overcome and turned into successes.
Furthermore, this paper contributes to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of what it means to be physically deaf and culturally Deaf, and how both distinctions are significant to the existence and use of the Deaf Catholic Archives.
Copies are available in Dinand Library and the Deaf Catholic Archives.
