The train station was in a very deserted area, with much terrain surrounding us. Piling into taxis, we took a small drive to the Plaza de Mayor, which was very cool since there is a Plaza de Mayor in Madrid that we walk around frequently! It did not have many different shops and restaurants, and since this is the “center of Cuenca” I found myself to be a bit confused as to how we could spend the day here, but I was happy to learn I was very wrong.

We first toured a Cathedral that contained stained glass windows from hundreds of years ago to some new features from the 90s. I was intrigued to see the differences in the design, style, and colors used in the different stained glass windows, they were all well done and shined brightly into the cathedral!

Profe Iso also brought us on a tour through a spiral staircase to the top of the Cathedral, and we were able to look out onto the beautiful skyline that surrounded us.

We then left and went through numerous twists and turns that reminded us a bit of Toledo, except Cuenca had much less foot traffic which made it easier to navigate. The group walked up this long hill to arrive at lunch, where we feasted on lamb, huevos rotos, arroz plates, and numerous other delicious foods. After fueling up, we went to this lookout point where Professor Iso told us numerous stories that had been passed down, including why there was a set of blue eyes on a rock that looked like they were crying.

Once watching our step down the rock stairs that brought us back to the road, we set off for a few new stops, like a museum and then the “hanging houses” that had a bridge down the path that we crossed.

The hanging houses are a staple of Cuenca, and they seem to be falling off the cliff, but had been there for years due to their sturdiness. The skyline behind them was absolutely breathtaking, and we crossed the bridge to be able to fully appreciate the view. After an adrenaline rush, we crossed the bridge and turned around to see the magnificent skyline. The hanging houses seemed to be decorated by the sun, with a gold tint behind them that peered through. After Professor Iso told us another story, we walked towards an historic hotel and awaited our cabs.

Originally, I had the idea that Cuenca was very similar to Toledo, due to the seemingly “medieval” look that both places had. Instead, Cuenca was a beauty not comparable to Toledo, with different aspects to appreciate it. A few of us loved the trip so much that we got shirts that showed the hanging houses with the word “Cuenca” on the front! A very memorable trip, with memories, views, and food that we will bring home with us.

Written by: Emily Foscaldo After about an hour train ride, we arrived at the wonderful Cuenca.
